A more modern (from the enlightenment) philosophical view is humanism. Try checking it out, it may be up your alley. It also has the advantage of fitting very well into today's western world.

Looking for philosophy experts
by jstalin inhello all, i'm looking for some expert(s) on philosophy, specifically ancient philosophy.
the short story is that i don't want to raise children within a specific religion, but i'd still like to raise them with a philosophical underpinning for the important ways to live life.
i've been looking at some ancient philosophical systems that encompass my core beliefs.

My story in the Monticello Times
by Shepherd Book ini took the advice of some here and "went to the press".
here's the resulting article: http://www.monticellotimes.com/articles/2009/04/09/community/879zimmerman.txt.
i think it turned out rather well..

What a great article. Thanks for putting your story out there and sharing it with us as well.
The WT is always so afraid of anything reflecting badly on them. Don't they know that this stuff is worse than any "inappropriate facial hair" or other petty infraction they can come up with? When will they ever stop their ridiculous shunning policy?
Sharing your story publically gives a great warning to anyone who would consider becoming a JW. Great job!

Memorial "observers" - meditate on this before rejecting the emblems!
by yadda yadda 2 indo you have gods spirit?.
...we, in turn, might receive the adoption as sons.
now because you are sons, god has sent forth the spirit of his son into our hearts and it cries out: abba, father!
-
Mrs. Fiorini
The way the WT celebrates the memorial is one of the things that I find most repugnant about them spiritually. It takes a lot of nerve to tell millions of people that they can't do what Christ commanded his followers to do.
Satan himself couldn't design a more devious and sacrilegious ceremony than gathering people together to pass the body and blood of Christ around and refusing to consume it. What the WT has done by convincing the majority of their followers that they are not allowed to partake is absolutely cruel.
What a mockery of Christ! Could there be a more obvious example of what it is to be an antichrist: convincing their followers to reject Jesus while claiming to be the only means of salvation?

Hey, whats wrong with Smurfs???
by Albert Einstein ini was baptized in early 90s and live in eastern europe.. from your comments i noticed, that some time in the past jws had a problem with smurfs... like being afraid of or avoiding ... i never heard anything about that in my dub life... .
so is there some story behind that?
did you play with smurfs as kids?

Back in the eighties I knew a JW sister who had Smurf tennis shoes. After hearing the rumors, she decided to burn them. It was too bad, too. She was a poor, single mother who didn't have that many pairs of shoes and little money to buy new ones. She really shouldn't have burned them.
About that same time there were rumors about Proctor and Gamble being a satanic corporation. Their corporate logo was said to be evidence. Many JWs I knew were refusing to buy any P & G products. Of course, that was later proven to be false information too.
It seems to me that some groups of people are predisposed to accept these kinds of rumors when they come around. The JWs are one of them.

Just recently finished my one year anniversary here, plans for the year ahead
by JimmyPage inmy first year here was life-changing.
(the first time i read this board, i thought, what's up with all the science fiction borg/jedi master references?
) i started out with a fair share of doubts about the organization, but hearing the loaded language at the meetings kept me still thinking it was possibly the truth.

Thanks for sharing that Jimmy. This site has meant a lot to me too. And you're right. It is addicting!

Can a JW (who is "IN" for family) be an ATHEIST?
by african GB Member ini mean how would an atheist jw go to fs to tell worldlies about jehovah while he does'nt really believe in god?.
will the holy spirit "guide" such an individual?.
will the angels "accompany" such.....?.
-
Mrs. Fiorini
"Will the HOLY SPIRIT "guide" such an individual?"
IMO anyone who is starting to see the lies of the WT is being guided by the holy spirit, whether they believe in God or not.

Long time lurker, 1st time poster
by Mattieu inwell where do i start, perhaps will go into more detail later, though briefly - 40 years young, raised in the truth (kingdom baby, which meant i was never going to make it to primary/secondary school/work/get married/have kids....) former ms, regular pioneer, learnt 3 foreign languages, served in foreign language group, married (wife still goes to meetings), beautiful kids, baptised at 15 years of age, regular pioneer at 15, grew up in divided house.. .
hmmm, will go into my issues with all things organisational later, though firstly want to apologise, for being a self righteous spiritual pratt who did things by the book and sat with other elders/mss and prejudged others for not doing enough and having a wrong attitude about all matters spiritual and organisational.
i stepped down as an ms over a year ago (they were grooming me to be an elder), havent been to a meeting in 3 months, i knew it wasnt the truth for a number of years and have struggled badly the last few years.

Book study comment on DF'ing tonight SUCKED!!!
by maryacclaim inso i went to the meeting tonight with my mom, cuz she's visiting.
i know i know, that's my first mistake.. so, they're going over this part on disfellowshipping, and they start going on and on about how it's jehovah's love for the congregation that "he disfellowships.".
yeah so its not the organization that disfellowships, its jehovah.
